Cisco's popular PIX firewall platform has been end of life for some time now. Most customers have not upgraded due to the features, stability and familiarity of the platform. However we are now approaching the date for the end of software updates in mid 2009. Many customers will need to trade up before this date to maintain software updates and security compliance.
The Cisco ASA builds upon several of Cisco's security products including the PIX, VPN concentrator and IDS platforms. This means the ASA not only shares the same familiar interface and allows configuration migration but that it also provides features from the other products in one unit, including Intrusion protection, Anti-X / Anti Virus Scanning and SSL VPN.
