What is Data Centre 3.0?

Data Centre 3.0 is a Cisco initiative announced in 2007 combining virtualisation with the ultimate goal of automating the data centre. So why are we talking about it now?  Well now the Cisco Datacentre 3.0 model is ready to bring business benefits to you today.

In a similar way to how most offices network their printing resources now, Data Centre 3.0 brings together various separate data centre technologies (including Ethernet, Fibre Channel and InfiniBand) into a single fabric for the connection and virtualisation of network elements. Previous switches were either Ethernet based or Storage based. Datacentre 3.0 unifies the data centre fabric in the same way Cisco Unified Communications has revolutionised the delivery of office communications and collaboration.

Many will already be familiar with the term ‘cloud computing’ in the media which is only one element addressed by Data Centre 3.0 which is service orientated revolving around a web 2.0 based virtualised environment, allowing staff to securely and remotely access resources.  With the right technology in place, IT Managers are able to provide real-time and dynamic orchestration of infrastructure services from shared pools of virtualised server, storage and network resources.

Ultimately, the Data Centre 3.0 strategy has been developed by Cisco to enable server, network and application virtualisation, therefore improving business continuity, efficiency and data storage resource utilisation whilst delivering cost effective solutions.

Cisco's Nexus data centre switching platform is set to be one of the biggest changes in data centre architecture since the Catalyst 6000 platform in 1999.  With an astounding 15Tb/s throughput in a single chassis, this not only takes throughput up a notch, but increases it by a new order of magnitude.  Cisco spent more than $20m developing the product which involved the creation of new RFC standards for lossless Data Centre Ethernet.
